Religious Signs

Ascension

Ascension most commonly refers to the departure of Jesus from this earth into heaven, and is recounted in the biblical book called the Acts of the Apostles. It says that Jesus’ disciples saw him being lifted up, disappearing into a cloud as they looked upwards.

The writers of the New Testament lived at a time when people thought of heaven as something above the earth. Both popular images and traditional religious show Jesus being lifted and moving skywards. The Auslan sign is based on this understanding.
