The Pharisees were a faction of the Jewish religion active during the time of Jesus, and in the two centuries or so before his birth. They believed not only in the written Law (the first five books of the bible), but also in the oral law, which God also gave to Moses on Mt. Sinai. They are usually portrayed in the Gospels as stereotyped hypocrites who did not practice what they preached.
