Holy has two meanings. In the Old Testament, God is called “holy”. This means that God is totally different or separate from human beings. Places and things that were holy were separate from everything else. The centre of the Jerusalem temple was called the “Holy of Holies”. No one was allowed to enter it except the High Priest, and he could do that only once a year.
By its other meaning “holy” describes the kind of life that a Christian should live. To be holy means trying to follow the example of Jesus, and live by his values. Saints are people who have done this by living lives of extraordinary goodness.
