The conference is open to all Deaf and hearing people who work in the pastoral care fields and other services within the Deaf Community and for the Deaf community members themselves. It will be an opportunity for Deaf Catholics to experience their faith in their natural language – Auslan.

This rare event will give participants the opportunity to discuss and learn more about a variety of topics of importance to our community like changing demographics, relationships, aged care and inclusion. There will be opportunity to share ideas and practices with a focus on the well-being and sustainability of our Deaf Catholic communities.

This event is open to everyone. We encourage Deaf and hearing people to attend and any professionals and community members who may be involved in Deaf Catholic communities around Australia and neighbouring countries.

The program will consist of two social events, presentations and Q&A sessions – and topics included are:

• International Catholic Foundation for the Service of Deaf
• History of Deaf Population and how demographics may affect our community
• About pastoral care
• Self-care for pastoral workers
• Senior deaf community and pastoral / spiritual care
• Changes to our community organisations – sustainability and evolution
• Pastoral care: grief and relationships
• Deafhood and Youth
• Interpreting in Catholic setting
• Inclusion and Deaf awareness

Key Note Speakers: 

We have an impressive list of speakers for our conference and we look forward to learning more from them. The list includes:

  • Terry and Mary O’Meara (USA)

Terry O’Meara is an Executive Director for International Catholic Foundation for the Service of Deaf Persons. Mary O’Meara works as an Executive Director for the Department of Special Needs Ministries under Archdiocese of Washington in USA, and is also a board director with International Catholic Foundation for the Service of Deaf Persons.

  • Dr Breda Carty (AUS)

There will be a special presentation by Deaf Australian Dr Breda Carty.
Dr Carty is a lecturer at the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children (RIDBC), Renwick Centre, providing Deaf Studies Programs.

Delegates can also choose to register for individual days or events at a higher rate.

  • administration (prior to and at the event)
  • ushers (for social events and at the conference days)
  • registration processing at the conference
  • hospitality (set up for Ephpheta Sunday lunch on Sunday 20th August and set up for Social Dinner on Tuesday 21st August)
