Reena’s Rainbow Auslan Translation by JPC

Family Support Worker Melissa Thompson, met children’s author Dee White and illustrator Tracie Grimwood at the launch of their picture book ‘Reena’s Rainbow’. The main character in this picture book is a little girl, Reena, who is Deaf. The story showcases her strong visual skills, and describes her befriending a homeless dog, saving a little boy from an accident, and making friends with other children. The book is about embracing individuality and difference. Reena has a supportive mother, who is drawn signing with Reena.

At the book launch, MT approached Dee and Tracie about making an Auslan version of this book. Permission was sought and granted by the publisher, EK Books (the children’s arm of Exisle Publishing), and funding was obtained ($500 from Cobaw Community Health paid to JPC).

Filming has occurred, with Katrina Mynard performing the Auslan translation, and editing is underway. The finished product will be launched at a community event organized by JPC, and publicity of this project and our organization has been gained through the social media channels of JPC, EK Publishing, and the author Dee White.
