Carmel Phillips is profoundly deaf and was appointed as Executive Manager in January 2020. Carmel previously worked at Monash University for 33 years, in various departments, most recently as the Graduations Coordinator for the past 18 years which included travelling offshore to coordinate ceremonies.
Carmel attended Delgany School in Portsea, communicating initially through oral language and eventually became fluent in Auslan through her connection to the Deaf Community. She regulalry went away camping with Youth Groups coordinated by Fr Peter Robbo – a fun experience.
Carmel and her parents, Vic (dec) and Ida Whelan have a very strong connection with JPC (Catholic Deaf Community) over many years. It seems that she’s come in a full circle, returning to JPC once again after raising two sons, Brent and Matthew.
Carmel is thrilled to be appointed as the Executive Manager and is really looking forward to working with you all and to make the Centre a happy and vibrant community space.
